Using PoopScout

How does a poop check work?

Add your dog or cat, then take a photo of the poop or pick one from your library. Tick anything else you've noticed, like vomiting, not eating, low energy, straining, a diet change or eating something odd. Scout sends the photo for analysis, and in a few seconds you get a next step, a stool score, a color read, any findings, a Gut Score, what it might mean and what to do now. Every check is saved to your pet's log so you can follow the trend.

What do the four results mean?

Red flags always win. If a symptom you tick sounds urgent, PoopScout says call a vet now, whatever the photo looks like.

What is the stool score?

It is the 1 to 7 fecal scoring scale many vets use for dogs and cats. A 1 is very hard and dry. A 2 is firm, segmented and easy to pick up, and is the ideal. A 3 is a little soft. A 4 or 5 is soggy to mushy and loses its shape. A 6 is a soft pile with no real shape, and a 7 is watery. The trend over several checks usually tells you more than a single poop.

What is the Gut Score?

A simple 0 to 100 summary of one check that combines the stool score, color and findings, so you can see at a glance whether things are heading up or down over time. It is a guide for you, not a medical measurement.

Does it work for cats?

Yes. Dogs and cats are both supported. For cats, scoop the poop onto a paper towel or photograph it in the box in good light. Clumping litter stuck to the outside can change how it looks, so mention it in your notes. The Guide has litter box notes too.

How do I take a good photo?

How many free checks do I get?

3 poop checks in total. The full guide and your log stay free, with or without Pro.

Can I track more than one pet?

The free version covers one pet. PoopScout Pro adds multiple pets, each with its own log and trend.

How do I make a report for my vet?

With PoopScout Pro, make a vet report from your pet's log. Choose the last 7, 14 or 30 days, and share the PDF by email, message or AirDrop, or print it. It includes scores, colors, findings and your notes.

Accuracy and safety

How accurate is PoopScout?

An honest answer: PoopScout is an AI reading a photo. It looks at what a photo can show, like consistency, color, and visible blood, mucus or worms. It cannot see inside your pet, test a sample, or know your pet's history the way your vet does. Light, angle, litter and grass can fool it, and it can miss things or flag things that are not there. Use it as a second pair of eyes and a nudge about when to call, not as the final word.

Is this a diagnosis?

No. PoopScout is not a vet and not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. It gives general guidance and a suggested next step. Your vet is the person to ask about your pet's health.

Can PoopScout spot worms?

It can point out things in the photo that look like worms or worm segments, such as small white pieces that look like grains of rice. Many intestinal parasites and their eggs are far too small to see, so a clear photo does not rule them out. Your vet can run a fecal test.

What should I do in an emergency?

Don't wait for the app. Call your vet or the nearest emergency animal hospital. If you think your pet ate something toxic, in the US you can also call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. A consultation fee may apply.

Privacy and your data

Where does my photo go?

When you run a check, the photo travels over an encrypted connection to our server, which sends it to Google Gemini for analysis and returns the result to your phone. We do not store the photo on our servers. The app asks for your OK before the first photo is sent. The full details are in our privacy policy.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account, no login and no email address to give. PoopScout has no ads and no tracking.

Where is my log stored?

On your phone only. There is no copy on our servers, so if you delete the app, the log goes with it. If you move to a new iPhone, the log comes along only if it is included in your own iPhone backup or transfer.

How do I delete my data?

In the app, open Settings and tap Delete my data. This erases your pets, log, results, photos and notes from your phone and replaces the anonymous id with a new one. Deleting the app does the same. There are no photos or logs on our servers to delete. If you would also like your purchase record removed from RevenueCat, our subscription service, email us.

Purchases

What does Pro cost?

$29.99 a year with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers, $4.99 a month, or $44.99 once for lifetime access. These are US prices; prices in other countries are set through the App Store and may differ.

How do I restore purchases?

Open PoopScout, go to Settings or the Pro screen, and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you are signed in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to buy Pro.

How do I cancel my subscription?

On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose PoopScout and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date, or before the free trial ends, to avoid being charged. Pro stays on until the end of the period you paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Can I get a refund?

Purchases are made through Apple, so refunds are handled by Apple. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something went wrong, email us too and we will help where we can.
